Lore Summary
The year is 2027, and for one reason or another, you are a resident of Lower Hengsha. Augmentations are becoming not only accepted, but widespread and popular. The human form is increasingly becoming morphed, changed and improved by mechanical parts and machinery. Massive conglomerates and corporations such as Darrow Industries, Sarif Industries and Tai Yong Medical are becoming worth millions, if not billions more as a result of the mass purchase of augmentations (affectionately known as augs), and expanding their influence and networks as a result. These augmentations come in hundreds of shapes and sizes, ranging from limb replacement to neural augmentations that can increase intelligence and/or alter how well you perform certain tasks. Additionally, the augmentations can range from the simple and mundane, to the frighteningly powerful displays of superhuman agility and strength that would shock just about anyone that wasn't a seasoned veteran; including invisibility, bulletproof armor, and the ability to clear an entire room of enemies or civilians alike. Shady business deals occur behind the scenes on a daily basis, and conspiracy theories just absurd enough to be true, normally are.
The sheer power of these augmentations has lead to a number of people questioning whether or not humans should augment themselves at all. Prejudice against the augmented population is alive and well, with multiple factions encouraging segregating and controlling the augmented portion of humanity for the safety of all mankind, a situation that is further inflamed by many of the events transpiring in the modern global climate. Augs running wild and going crazy is a substantial fear, one that's driven by human nature, the influence and manipulation of conspiratorial parties, and, at times, a result of real instances of augmented individuals driven insane by the pain of their body rejecting the augments when they run out of the ridiculously expensive drug neuropozyne. Adding to the conflict, there are both anti-Aug and augmented terrorist groups roaming the world, dolling out their own brand of justice and doing everything in their power to pursue their ideals at almost any cost.
You are in Hengsha, a two-tiered island off the coast of Shanghai, China. Before 2027, a second street level was built above ground level, on top of an enormous structure called the Pangu. Nicknamed the Jewel of the Yangtze River, it is at the heart of the global augmentation industry, with Tai Yong Medical headquartered within the city.
The lower city is divided into three major districts, Daigong, Kuaigan, and Youzhao, with various levels and sublevels. The roof level of the main district is home to the Hung Hua Hotel and The Hive. The Daigong district to the east is the walking path through to the Jiu Schichang District where the LIMB clinic and Alice Garden Pods are located, although there is also a subway train to/from Youzhao. Finally, the Youzhao district to the west is primarily residential district and is where the Court Gardens are located. There is also a sewer network underneath the city.
Upper Hengsha and Lower Hengsha are complete opposites. In Lower Hengsha, the city is a dystopia riddled with crime and poverty; Belltower Associates are the police force, and it is dark and gloomy. Whereas in Upper Hengsha, it is a utopia. It is daylight during the first visit, so it is brighter, and when inside the TYM tower just after the Pangu, the city floor has grass and trees and all sorts of vibrant life that can be observed. Apparently, the citizens of Upper Hengsha are snobbish and not very friendly towards their Lower City counterparts. How the world will react to the massive growth of augmented individuals, and the augmentation business, is at least in part, down to you.
